Civil Ceremony

By law in Italy the civil ceremony must
be performed in
the town hall or in a property belonging
to the local government.
The ceremony is conducted in Italian e
normally lasts 15 to 20
minutes.
An interpreter is necessary if neither
bride nor bridegroom
speak Italian. The ceremony can be
enriched if desired. After
the readings the rings are exchanged
and both witnesses and
bride and bridegoom sign the wedding
act
A minimum of 4 days permanence is
obligatory before
the wedding service can be celebrated.
Usually town hall
ceremonies are conducted in the morning,
but many town halls
are available in the afternoon and on
saturday.
The marriage ceremony must be booked
well in advance.
Documents requested :
Full birth certificate
Photocopies of valid passport
No impediment certificate ( nulla osta)
2 Witnesses
An interpreter if neither party speaks
Italian
Registry fee ( this differs from one
town to another)
Religious ceremony - Catholic

A Catholic ceremony can only be held in
a church.
A catholic wedding is usually celebrated
when both bride and bridegroom are
catholic. However it is possible to
marry in a catholic church if the non
catholic party has attended the required
pre-marital classes and all the papers
have been approved by the catholic
authorities.
Documents required for a catholic
ceremony :
Certificate of baptism
Certificate of comunion
Certificate of confirmation
A declaration from church priest of
residence that you intend having
a religious blessing and that you are an
active menber of he catholic church
After sending these documents to the
Bishop in your city of residence, and
having obtained the " Religious non
objection declaration" all these
documents together with the documents
listed for a civil ceremony, must be
sent to the local Bishop in order to
acquire the " Italian religious nulla
osta ".
